Tour to the Petroglyphs of Chichictara, Palpa, Peru
$70.00
About the Tour
Thousands of petroglyphs can be found in the Nasca-Palpa region. Many of them bear a high resemblance to the recently discovered geoglyphs dated to the Paracas Period (800–200 B. C.), obviously the forerunners of the famous geoglyphs of the subsequent Nasca Period (200 B. C.–650 A. D.). While the Nasca geoglyphs are at the focus of numerous scientifi c works, petroglyphs and Paracas geoglyphs have not yet been the object of investigation.
The results of invesstigations indicate that petroglyph sites in this area were ancient resting places on long-distance trade routes which connected the coastal region with the highlands and probably even the Amazon region. In this context, new light is shed on the petroglyphs for iconographic interpretations.
Some petroglyphs of Chichictara were already recognized as typical Chavínoid or Paracas fi gures some decades ago (Mejía Xesspe 1972), here the focus is mainly on results concerning the archaeologically defined Paracas culture (today dated from 800 to 200 B. C.).
One of the petroglyph on rock number 6 of Chichictara’s sector shows a similar Chavín Head depiction
In particular, the depictions of the so-called Chavín Head are conclusive and can directly be linked with petroglyph number 6 . This is at least an indication for the dating of the petroglyphs.
Research to the Initial period (1800–800 B. C.) has only marginally been conducted in the south coastal region and was almost exclusively concentrated on central and northern Peru. Hence, it is completely unclear whether the Paracas culture has its roots in this region, or whether it is a result of a diffusion of the Chavín style from the central and northern highlands.
As well we will admire one of the most beautiful petroglyphs of La Viuda. This rock is called
“Las Tres Edades” = the three ages.
